Young Modulus Double Beam Cantilever SW1119

Exp-1 To determine the young modulus by double beam cantilever.

  • The glow of bulb appear and disappear when the spherometer just touches and untouches the rod during loading and unloading of bar.
  • Elasticity.
  • Young’s modulus.
  • Elastic limit
  • Neutral surface.
  • Longitudinal filaments.
  • Bending moment.
  • Stress.
  • Strain.
  • Geometrical moment of inertia.
  • Torque.
  • Elastic fatigue.

Principle and Working:
Based on Hook’s law that with in elastic limit stress is directly proportional to strain. i.e. stress/strain = a constant. This constant is called an modulus of elasticity. When the beam is depressed, it become curved. There is elongation of fibres of beam on convex side and contraction on concave side. Thus young modulus comes into picture due to longitudinal stress & strain.
A cantilever is a beam(rod) of uniform cross section whose length is large as compared to its cross section. With the help of hanger suspended at the middle of beam, supported on knife edges suitable loads are applied. A bulb and cell are connected in series between the central leg of spherometer and one end of beam. The depression of beam in the middle is measured with the help of spherometer.

Formula used :- Young`s modulus =Mgl3/4δbd3
Where,

M = mass suspended at the middle point of beam, L= length of beam (distance between the knife edges).

b = Breadth of beam.

d = thickness of beam.

δ= depression at the middle point of the beam, determined using spherometer.
